We were very saddened to hear about the recent tragedy on the island of Fogo. A minibus came off the road and into a ravine during the evening of Saturday 5 September. The vehicle fell some 30m from the road between Chã das Caldeiras and Campanas de Cima. The passengers were mostly children and young people and sadly 25 people were killed and 14 injured. In a small community this is unbearably sad. The Cape Verde government has said that it will cover the funeral costs including travel for relatives having to fly from Praia. A specialist medical team comprising people from Santiago and São Vicente was sent to Fogo. One of the victims was transferred to Praia.
It has been stated that this was the largest accident with loss of life in a single day ever recorded in Cape Verde. A report and investigation into the accident has been commenced.
