Mountains of Santo Antão

Santo Antão is the westernmost of the Cape Verde islands. It is also the second largest and one of the most mountainous. The mountains normally have clouds formed over the top, which provide moisture. As a result a number of crops are grown on the island, including sugar cane, yams, cassava, bananas, mangoes, and grain. Terraced hills are a feature of the island. The terracing having been created to facilitate the growing of crops. Farming on Santo Antão is only for the fit farmer!

The island does not currently have an airport, although there are plans to build one. It can be reached by ferry from Mindelo from the neighbouring island of São Vicente.
