The island of Santiago is now able to produce more electricity from renewables than is currently required at peak consumption. This is the result of expanding the capacity of a photovoltaic power plant in Palmarejo, Praia. The output from this plant has been increased from 4.4 to 10 megawatts. This is calculated to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 18,000 tonnes. This was made possible by an investment of 6.8 million euros by an international consortium. It involved collaboration between Águas de Ponta Preta (APP) and Portuguese company RESUL, Equipamentos de Energia SA. This is another step in the process of Cape Verde achieving 50% of its electrical requirements being from renewables by 2030.
