We reported in April of this year that there were plans to rebuild the pier in Santa Maria on the island of Sal. Much of the pier was destroyed in a storm in October 2024. Following on from earlier damage in August 2015. It has been announced that the pier reconstruction has now begun. The pier was a popular tourist attraction in Santa Maria and it provided a base for the fishermen and women. It has been missed by tourists and local people.
The $10m reconstruction project is expected to take 18 months. The work, which is being financed by the World Bank, includes new kiosks, restrooms and areas for fishing, trade and tourism. The new structure will provide better access and will be designed to withstand the effects of the sea.
