A big storm destroyed a considerable amount of the Santa Maria pier on Sal island in October 2024. Visitors were always an attracted to the pier. It is also a place of work for some people and also somewhere for youngsters to have fun diving into the sea. The Minister of Infrastructure, Territorial Planning and Housing, announced recently that the winner of the tender for the rebuilding of the pier has been identified. The reconstruction is priced at nearly 10m dollars. Part of the cost includes the acquisition of two semi-rigid boats to provide transportation of materials etc. Before the building work can start, various accommodation works are required. These include providing somewhere for the fishermen that operate from the pier and also the handicraft and souvenir vendors. It will be great to get this work completed. The Santa Maria pier was much loved as can be seen in this picture. It is missed by many people.
