Some directors form the RIU Group have recently met with the Minister of Tourism and Transport, Carlos Santos. RIU operate some of the all-inclusive hotels in Cape Verde with 4,700 rooms and employing over 2,000 people. Their hotels are on the islands of Boa Vista and Sal. One of the subjects discussed in the meeting was sustainability. At the meeting the RIU Group directors, including their Director General for Social Responsibility, put forward proposals for projects in children’s health, pre-school and good housing for workers. The issue of waste collection and treatment on these more popular tourist islands was also discussed.
As a result of this meeting a document was signed, which is to be the basis for putting these ideas into action. This meeting coincided with the Minister’s plan to diversify tourism and improve Cape Verde’s place in the tourist market.
