Unusually heavy rain in Santa Maria on Sal island on 10 October resulted in some of the roads being flooded. The rain started around midnight on 09 October and appears to have continued for over 10 hours. The fire brigade had to be mobilised to pump the water away so that traffic could get through. A few days later there was even more very heavy rain. Sal is normally one of the driest islands in the archipelago, so this was a particularly surprising occurrence and caused chaos with many hotels & businesses.
