Golf in Cape Verde

GOLF IN CAPE VERDE

Golf is not an activity that is widely available in Cape Verde. There are currently two courses, one on the island of São Vicente and one on the island of Sal. Grass is a scarce commodity on the Cape Verde islands, so your won’t find long grass fairways. However, Golf in Cape Verde can be an attractive activity where the weather is reliable and the sun is usually shining.

Where

The oldest course is on the island of São Vicente, just to the south of the main city of Mindelo. There is not a lot of information about this course, but it is an 18 hole course. The scarcity of grass means that it is mostly played on soil/sand.

The newest course is at Viveiro, just outside Santa Maria on the island of Sal. Here there are grass greens, kept watered with a mixture of sea water and recycled water. The first part of this development is nine holes, but a further nine are proposed. The course is Par 35 and a total length of about 2,800m. It is described as an oasis in the desert. There is a fully equipped practice area including a driving range and putting green. Good quality bags and clubs are available to hire. Trolley’s and electric golf buggies are also available for hire. The club area includes toilets, changing rooms and a bar and restaurant.

We work with Viveiro Golf Club in Santa Maria on the island of Sal.

Future

There are plans to build another course on the island of São Vicente, together with other sports facilities. As already mentioned, there are a further nine holes planned for the Viveiro course on the island of Sal. If these two facilities prove successful, there may be further courses to follow.
