The Charles Darwin volcanic field is located close to the Cape Verde islands. It is an underwater volcanic fielding the Atlantic Ocean. On 26 January 2023, there was a slight tremor felt in the two north westerly islands – Santo Antão and São Vicente. The epicentre of the earthquake was about 20km south west of Monte Trigo on Santo Antão. The cause was an accumulation of magna in the depth of the ocean. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 10km. It was the highest magnitude recorded in Cape Verde since the recording infrastructure was installed in 2010. The earthquake magnitude was recorded at 5.3, but no damage has been reported, apart from some loose rocks on some of the roads on Santo Antão.
