Cidade Velha, Cabo Verde refurbishment

In June 2023 we reported on proposals for the Cidade Velha renovation. This town is the original capital of Cape Verde and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The work has now started and the first stage is work on the São Verissimo Fort. This 16th Century fort will become a museum. This work includes repairs and refurbishment of the walls and the interior. It is hoped that new lighting, access and the museum content will be completed within the first 6 months of 2024.

The fort was constructed in 1590 to protect the town from pirates. The town was then called Ribeira Grande and only renamed Cidade Velha later. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 2009. UNESCO states that the town contains elements that have “outstanding historical value” but were considered fragile. Cidade Velha is located on the south coast of Santiago Island. It is about 12km west of Praia, which became the capital in 1770.
