Cesária Évora documentary film

The Portuguese film director Ana Sofia Fonseca has produced ‘Cesária Évora’ a documentary on the famous Cape Verdean singer. During December, there will be six free showings of this documentary in Cape Verde. This was announced by the Minister of Culture and Creative Industries, Abraão Vicente. The schedule of the showings is as follows:

13, 14 and 15 December – National Center for Art, Crafts and Design (CNAD) in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente

16 December – Ribeira Grande on the island of Santo Antão

17 and 18 December – National Assembly in Praia on the island of Santiago

The Cesária Évora documentary tells of her time in São Vicente. It covers how she cared for others and gave her time to anyone who came to her door. However, she also had problems with depression and possibly also had bipolar disorder. The film includes previously unpublished material including photographs and statements from family and friends of the singer. The movie won the Public Prize at the Indie Lisbon Festival in May 2022. It also received a mention at the Krakow Festival. Évora, known as the ‘Barefoot Diva’ died 10 years ago and was one of the biggest names in music worldwide.
