CAPE VERDE DOMESTIC FLIGHTS

Most islands have an airport served by scheduled flights, with the exception of Santo Antão and Brava. The domestic flights in Cape Verde are operated by CVsky. Some routes do not have scheduled services every day and flight times are subject to change or cancellation on occasion. Flight times vary between the islands with the shortest only 15min (Praia to Maio) and longest being about 55 min (Praia to São Vicente). Check-in closes 40 mins before the scheduled departure time. Although the airports are not large, it is recommended that you arrive in good time. The airport in Praia, the capital city, is the main hub for internal flights.

Checked-in luggage is included up to 23kg. Hand luggage must not weigh more than 6kg and maximum dimensions are 55 x 35 x 25 cm. One piece of hand luggage only.

It is advisable to book your tickets in advance. There is a link to the CVsky website below. Tickets can also be booked through local travel agencies.

CVsky airlines

This is the domestic airline for the Cape Verde Islands, which also handles a few international routes. Flights can be booked on the CVsky website.

It should be noted that there aren’t flights to each island every day. Some islands only have a few flights a week. Please note that they do not publish their flight schedules for more than a few months at a time. So if there are no flights scheduled for the period you wish to travel, you will need to wait.

CAPE VERDE FERRIES BETWEEN ISLANDS

The ferries in Cape Verde are operated under one company – CV Interilhas, the link to which is below. The islands of Brava and Santo Antão can only be reached by ferry. The main Cape Verde ferry routes are shown on the map below. Ferry services are subject to change and so you should always check with the operator. Ferry tickets can be purchased through CV Interilhas or through local travel agencies. As with internal flights, ferries do not operate on each route every day, with one or two exceptions, such as between São Vicente and Santo Antão. Ferry sailings can also be subject to cancellation because of rough seas. Some crossings can also be quite choppy, so if you are inclined to be ill on boats, we would suggest you take the flight where possible.

CV Interilhas

CV Interilhas covers all the internal Cape Verde ferry routes. Tickets for ferries can be booked through their website. Timetables for the various routes are also available on their website. Unfortunately, they only show their timetables one month at a time.

Marine Traffic – live arrivals and departures

This site provides live departures and arrivals for the main ports in Cape Verde. These include Praia (Santiago), Furna (Brava), Mindelo (São Vicente), Porto Ingles (Maio), Porto Novo (Santo Antão), Tarrafal (São Nicolau), Sal Rei (Boa Vista), Palmeira (Sal).  On these sites you can see the location of shipping in port and at sea, together with a map of the port and expected arrivals and departures.

Enepor is the port authority in Cape Verde. Information on the various ports in Cape Verde can be found here. In addition there is information on tides, cruise traffic, cargo, tariffs and regulations relating to shipping.

CAPE VERDE CAR HIRE

Car Hire is available on each of the islands. However the topography on each of the islands varies quite considerably. Some islands are mountainous and some are much flatter. Therefore, if renting a car, you might consider the type of vehicle is the most suitable. So, the guide below will help you make the right choice.

Santiago

A small car is perfectly suitable if you plan to stay on the main paved roads. If you intend to explore rougher or unpaved roads, an SUV with higher ground clearance is a better choice, for example if you are planning to drive from Praia to visit Tarrafal. A 4×4 is not necessary.

São Vicente

Most of the island can be explored with a regular small car, especially when sticking to the main roads. An SUV is recommended if you plan to venture onto rougher, unpaved tracks. A 4×4 is not necessary.

Santo Antão

A 4×4 is not essential, but the island’s steep mountain roads make the choice of car more important. For exploring beyond the main paved roads, we recommend a vehicle with good ground clearance, strong brakes and a reasonably powerful engine. If you’re staying on the main paved routes, a small car can be sufficient.

Boa Vista

SUVs and pickup trucks are the most popular choices here. A 4×4 is not required for normal roads, but it is strongly recommended for sandy or rough tracks, which are common when exploring more remote parts of the island. Avoid deep sand, dunes and beaches unless your rental company specifically allows it.

Sal

A regular car is sufficient for most of the island’s main roads and popular destinations. If you plan to explore sandy, rocky or more remote tracks, an SUV or 4×4 will give you better ground clearance and traction.

When in doubt

Choose an SUV if you plan to explore away from the main roads. Always check your rental company’s rules before driving off-road or onto sandy tracks, as some routes may not be covered by insurance.
