Anyone who has flown to Sal island in recent years will be familiar with the condition of the road between the airport and Santa Maria. The taxi drivers have become expert at avoiding the potholes on this airport road. This road links Santa Maria the main town of Espargos as well as the airport.
Work has now started on repairing this road. The resurfacing is expected to take about 18 months. The work, which is being funded by the World Bank, is necessary as this is a well used road. The estimated cost of the work being €1.7m. The new road will also have a cycle path along its whole length. There will be some restrictions during the work but safety and continuous use will be maintained. However, the taxi drivers are asking that there are better provisions made to allow traffic to flow.
